Purpose Statement for Presbyterian Women

Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves

  • To nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study,
  • To support the mission of the church worldwide,
  • To work for justice and peace, and
  • To build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church and witnesses to the promise of God’s kingdom.

Meetings

Dorchester PW meets on the 4th Thursday of each month from September through May in the fellowship hall at 10AM. In November, we meet on the 3rd Thursday, and also the 3rd Thursday in December, but in December we meet at the Village of Summerville for lunch. Our meetings begin with fellowship and refreshments, followed by a lesson, and then a business meeting. Women who are not able to attend morning meetings are still included as members and participate in events and workshops.

Presbytery Women’s Fall and Spring Gatherings

A group of Dorchester women participate in the Fall and Spring Gatherings at different churches throughout the Charleston Atlantic Presbytery. We have also taught workshops at the Fall Gatherings. Our moderator is on the Coordinating Team for the Charleston Atlantic Presbytery which plans these gatherings.

Epworth Synod Gathering

Our moderator attends the triennial synod gathering at Epworth on Saint Simons Island to be refreshed and to stay current with Presbyterian Women at the Synod level.

Church-wide Triennial Gathering

Our moderator attended the Church-wide Triennial Gathering in Minneapolis. We benefitted from a great deal of information on missions and human trafficking.

Mission Efforts

Dorchester Presbyterian Women have been making surgical caps and therapy dolls for children at MUSC for the past several years. St. Andrews Presbyterian Women has also teamed up to help. We also knit or crochet prayer shawls to meet the needs of our congregation and friends. We support the Presbyterian Women’s Mission Pledge and Birthday offerings. Each January, we collect paper products for a local homeless shelter.

Other Events

Presbyterian Women participate in events throughout the year, including

  • Each January we host a luncheon for residents of the Village of Summerville.
  • Each February, we host a dinner and game night for the Dorchester Youth.
  • Each Spring, we participate in Dorchester Serves Day completing a project for mission in the fellowship hall.
  • Each October, we have the Colonial Bazaar which sells items made at Dorchester.
    • We do not use vendors.
    • The proceeds from our bazaar go to missions selected by Presbyterian Women
  • Each December, we join with Dorchester Youth and decorate the Chrismon Tree in the sanctuary.
